Position Overview

The Lead Histology Technician is responsible for proficiently performing routine histology technique, solution preparation, supply management, maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment and workstations, and good documentation practices (GDP) in recordkeeping, to support Quality Control Product Release Testing. Compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), laboratory safety procedures, and maintenance of department databases/files are required. Additionally, the Lead Histology Technician is responsible for assisting the histology supervisor during weekend/off business hours in ensuring proper lab operations; as well as troubleshooting histology technique and equipment issues; support equipment validations; cross-functional training activities; continuous/process improvement projects; and the Quality Management System.

Main Areas of Responsibilities

  • Receipt, catalogue, and accession specimens.

  • Perform Tissue preparation including: rehydration of freeze dried tissue samples; rinsing of “ready to use” tissue samples; record observations and take digital images of gross specimens/test tissue; specimen grossing and fixation/preservation; tissue processing; paraffin embedding; cryo-embedding; paraffin microtomy; cryo-microtomy, H&E staining; and histochemical stains (special stains), such as Verhoeff-Van Gieson, (VVG) for product release testing.

  • Prepare and maintain accurate specimen identification throughout Histology testing process (i.e. specimen containers, cryo vials, cassettes, blocks, slides, images, department data bases, etc...).

  • Operate standard and histology laboratory equipment.

  • Assist with gross dictation, measurements, and imaging of clinical or other samples; and support R&D, Complaints and Clinical studies as assigned.

  • Comply with cGxP, GDP and SOPs when entering data into workflow spreadsheets, databases, and controlled logbooks.

  • Perform block/slide verifications.

  • Become a qualified peer reviewer of lab records for all phases of routine histology; and ensure lab records and logbooks are reviewed and retained.

  • Demonstrate proficient histological technique and recordkeeping to internal/external auditors, management, new and cross-functional employees.

  • Coordinate technical work flow.

  • Daily reporting of Workload status to management.

  • Prepare stock & working solutions; and label in accordance with chemical management procedures.

  • Maintain chemical inventory and storage requirements.

  • Observe universal and safety precautions when handling biological specimens and chemicals.

  • Adhere to waste disposal regulations for chemicals and biohazard materials.

  • Maintain a safe laboratory and current SDS files for chemicals.

  • Replenish supplies as needed and ensure a timely notification of inventory needs.

  • Routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and workstations.

  • Ensure lab is organized; and there is a systematic and timely filing of blocks, slides, and supplies.

  • Perform troubleshooting, verification checks, and maintenance of instruments/equipment as required to maximize performance.

  • Report equipment malfunctions to management. Tag equipment out-of-service as required and schedule service calls (as needed).

Minimum Requirements

  • Histology & Histochemistry (Special Stains) Technique

  • Laboratory & Chemical Safety, and Blood Borne Pathogens training

  • Computer Skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

  • Organizational Skills; and the ability to organize and prioritize tasks/projects

  • Teamwork and Interpersonal Skills. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written with all levels of management, internal and external customers, vendors, and those of diverse cultures.

  • Ability to work in laboratory environments, with potentially bio-hazardous materials including human and animal tissues and a variety of hazardous chemicals, including carcinogens and teratogens.

  • Experience with standard laboratory equipment operation, e.g. balance, pH meter, centifuge, incubators, shakers, stirrers, waterbath, and hot plate.

  • Experience with histology equipment operation, e.g. tissue processors, embedding units, paratrimmer, microtome, cryostat, and auto-stainer.

  • Experience in troubleshooting histology technique, e.g. processing, embedding, microtomy, and H&E staining.

  • GDP training; and experience in working in a GMP, GCP, or GLP environment.

  • Familiar with AATB, ISO, FDA, and USP regulations/guidelines, and audits.

  • Basic Mechanical skills and Lifting up to 20 lbs

  • Good visual skills, manual dexterity and eye-to-hand coordination

  • Ability to follow SOP’s and Work Instructions with attention to detail

  • Strong math skills, aptitude for analysis and technical writing

  • Cell Biology and Tissue Structure knowledge

  • Microscopic and Image analysis is a plus

  • Process Improvement experience, e.g. six-sigma, LEAN principles, etc…

Additional Requirements and Education:

  • A.S. in Biology/related science

  • Technical Certification (HT, HTL, QIHC, or related) preferred/eligible

  • 5+ years Histology technique

  • 3-5 years laboratory experience in a GXP environment

  • 1-3 years in histochemistry (Special Stains)
