Position Overview

The Director, Core Team Leader will be based in Irvine, CA and is accountable to guide, inspire and lead matrixed global teams to formulate the project / program strategy of device development, clinical trial design and execution and regulatory submissions. This role is responsible for the successful development and commercialization of medical devices and/or drug/device, biologic/device combination products. The projects/programs this individual leads are multi-site and they range from technology development, co-development, acquisitions to internal development programs.

Main Areas ofResponsibilities


  • Leads cross-functional development teams to achieve project milestones and other approved objectives. Interacts with cross functional managers to secure team resources and to ensure project plan execution within budget and timeline and to meet quality requirements.

  • Ensures teams are focused and motivated to drive results of key milestones and goals. Mentors and coaches team members for optimal performance and develops key skills in project team members to continue to build bench strength of our project team members. Provides on going feedback to project team members for optimal performance. Provides input to functional manager on Core Team Member’s performance.

  • Develops and maintains strong relationships with functional head peer group to drive success of Core Team members and overall Core Team contributions. Organizational champion of cross functional collaboration and effective communication within the team, with functional managers and at Sr. Management level.

  • Demonstrates adaptability by leading the overall program and by leading a sub-team of a program

ProductDevelopment/Project Management:

  • Accountable for the successful delivery of high quality product development programs to plan. Develops and manages project plans. Accountable for managing the budget, schedule, and performance of projects. Proactively identify, assign and ensure that all project deliverables are completed and issues are resolved, monitor progress against Global Development Strategy, and resolve deviations. Takes personal accountability and a commitment to results.

  • Develops and maintains key metrics on program performance to plan (cost, schedule and performance).

  • Benchmark businesses historical performance on key metrics and develop long and short-term plans to bring the product development organization to an industry leading state.

  • Builds team ownership and commitment to project plans.

  • Leads structured & critical thinking mechanisms for cross functional project teams. Directs team in appropriate decision making through strong judgment and the ability to analyze options and implications.

  • Directs and trains key development processes with a focus on the voice of the customer, voice of the business, voice of innovation/technology, and voice of regulatory/clinical.

  • Collaborates with functional leaders to determine resource requirements and ensure adequate resources are deployed in order to meet project milestones.

  • Provides input to thetechnical approach to technology application and new product development.

ProductDevelopment/Process Management:

  • Contributes to the development and continuous improvement of the development process by identifying and applying best practices.

  • Influences cross functional systems effectiveness.

  • Serve as the champion of cross functional best practices and effective integration and communication in a matrixed organizational structure.

Business Reviews:

  • Responsible for cross functional organizational communications on product development performance. Prepare and conduct presell meetings with leadership members. Prepare and present phase review presentations.

  • Responsible for elevating critical business decisions on existing products to the appropriate management boards and/or functional management.

  • Identifies, communicates, and manages project risk. Influence decision making regarding prioritization of all projects/technologies.

  • Consistently influencesmajor decisions affecting multiple programs of a franchise.

Design Reviews:

  • Accountable for conducting Design Reviews based on Allergan’s Design Control and Risk Management procedures



  • Must possess strong technical skills in combination with solid business acumen

  • Ability to influence individuals that are outside the span of direct control, i.e. influence without authority.

  • Proven competency in successfully working in a matrixed organization.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with proven presentation skills.

  • Published documents to be read at the highest level of the organization.

  • Demonstrated proven record of results attainment.

  • Must have Design Control and Risk Management expertise

  • Thorough knowledge of clinical trial design, execution and reporting of clinical trial results

  • Detailed understanding of regulatory submission and approval requirements for the device projects and also for drug/device or biologic/device combination products

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and commercialize new products by using a Stage Gate Product Development process

  • Strong clinical and device development expertise.

  • Ability to effectively communicate with and work with regulatory agencies to achieve the therapeutic area and corporate objectives.

  • Strong interpersonal / project management skills.

  • Ability to travel 15%+.


  • Experiencein developing medical devices and Drug/Device or Biologic/Device combinationproducts


  • Bachelor’s Degree and13+ years of related experience, Master’s Degree and 11+ years of relatedexperience or PhD and 8+ years of related experience. Degree in a related field(engineering or sciences).
