Position Overview

Job SUMMARY:

This role has a direct impact on US Alliance Advocacy Department deliverables. Responsible for developing and leading alliance advocacy plans across the product development lifecycle from pre-clinical to post-launch. Focuses on internal and external stakeholders to ensure physician and patient access.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Describe scope:

INTERNAL STAKEHOLDER RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops alliance advocacy strategy and tactics for Allergan therapeutic areas

  • Owns/executes on alliance advocacy plans for 4 SVPs and their team leadership

  • Owns/executes on alliance advocacy plans for Managed Markets for 1 SVP and team leadership needs to protect/expand physician and patient access, with public and private payers

  • Owns/executes on alliance advocacy plans for State Affairs AVP for 10-12 target states

  • Leads as an internal resource to identify opportunities needing influence/mobilization solutions around key areas of concern, especially in policies encumbering access to therapies across AGN portfolio –facilitating the activation campaigns and events

  • Facilitates cross-functionally as a strong partner and collaborator with other AGN functions to ensure coordinated/synchronized engagement with professional societies and patient advocacy groups across AGN portfolio

EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Builds and maintains long term, substantive relationships with alliances that are patient focused organizations, coalitions based on values of trust, respect and transparency so patients and providers systematically can engage decision makers in all aspects of clinical development, healthcare delivery and access

  • Leads efforts for patient access and reimbursement to medicines by coordinating with patient focused alliances to help determine the value of innovation and address access barriers

  • Heightens disease state and therapeutic-area knowledge among patient focused alliances and independent patient opinion leaders in support of activations for key product milestones

  • Identifies and shares opportunities for the department to stay up to date on new developments and ideas in the field of patient advocacy/engagement and incorporates such developments, ideas, and strategies into the development and execution of programs

  • Brings the voice of patients and providers into AGN enterprise capabilities, including Clinical TrialDesign, Direct-to-Patient Marketing, Corporate Communications, Policy, and Value and Access

  • Manages/evaluates/measures advocacy partners and programs initiatives to ensure maximum impact and desired goals and objectives are met in a timely manner and in budget

  • Develops program opportunities to enhance AGN’s reputation among patients and healthcare providers as a differentiated, innovative leader in developing and providing medicines that make a difference in patient’s lives

Requirements

Essential Skills, Experience, and Competencies (includes Licenses, Credentials)

  • 10+ years in life sciences/biotech

  • 4+ years inpatient advocacy, public health affairs/policy, corporate affairs, and/or managed markets

  • 4+ years sales, management, and/or marketing experience preferred

  • Direct experience leading innovative strategy and execution across product development from pre-clinical to post-launch

  • Created and launched programs/initiatives that favorably influenced access of public and private insurance payer policies

  • Demonstrated experience in providing solutions to access and reimbursement issues with buy/bill, prior authorizations, step therapy, formularies, and other managed markets channels -Payers, Employers, Veterans

  • Experience in delivering on the needs of a broad variety of external stakeholders, including patients/caregivers, consumers, health care providers, labor, employers, healthcare policy, regulatory affairs, and government agencies

  • Created and collaborated with a broad constituency of internal stakeholders and departments in building and driving a cohesive strategy

  • Experience in working in a fast-paced environment with multiple, competing priorities, identifying ways to improve existing processes

  • Proven energy for uncovering key external and internal trends affecting healthcare provider, patient and consumer engagement impacting AGN, and providing solutions to optimize advocacy impact

  • Outstanding verbal and written communications skills and an ability to adapt one’s approach to a challenge, as well as excellent interpersonal skills

  • Sensitivity to diverse groups of people both internal and external with the ability to manage many different opinions and perspectives, including tolerance for ambiguity

  • Demonstrated reputation internally and externally as a well-respected, dynamic team player

  • Empathic and passionate individual with the ability to build meaningful connections with stakeholders

  • Willingness to travel domestically about 40% of the time and attend “out of hours” activities and events, including weekends and evenings on occasion

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required; masters preferred
